At various times during the week, adults meet in smaller, more personal settings to deepen their spiritual life. These are highly recommended as ways to become acquainted with others and to explore the meaning of our faith. Some of these groups meet on a short-term basis. Others, which are more long-standing, are described here. Everyone is welcome to attend any Spiritual Life Group meeting.
Jonah Center for Earth and Art John Hall, Executive Director, and other church members are involved in this community effort to protect wildlife habitat, preserve biodiversity, offer environmental education, and promote energy efficiency and renewable energy in Middletown. The Jonah Center for Earth and Art uses art and outdoor recreation to foster appreciation and education about the environment and energy resources. A focus area of the Jonah Center is the lower Coginchaug River which enters the spectacular “Floating Meadows.” This rare marshland habitat can be viewed from the North End Peninsula, site of the city’s closed landfill.
Tuesday Night Bible Study: On the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month, a small group of about 6 people meets from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. to read and discuss a chapter from the scriptures and to talk about our Christian faith. Newcomers are most welcome to try it out even for one session.
The "Bees" (as they are affectionately called) made Jello desserts to The "Bees" - as they are affectionately known - are a dedicated, hard-working group of women who continue a long tradition of serving the local church and the wider community in a variety of ways. They meet once a month on a Thursday morning. The meeting usually includes a work project, a "focus on faith" educational program, a lunch, and a business meeting. The "Bees" disburse monies earned from their endowment to various church-related, charitable organizations, including First Church itself, and meet at other times as well for social gatherings, service-related projects, or educational field trips. |
